Hydrogen
Hydrogen can be completely clean source of energy emitting only water. Many say it is the way of the future and there has been large investments in its technology, infrastructure and projects in Scotland and throughout the world. However with the price of hydrogen being so steep currently it's use can not be justified for Balgair's heating needs currently. Can this change in the future though?
What is Hydrogen?
Hydrogen is an abundant element capable of delivering energy through combustion or fuel cell processes, emitting only water vapor as a byproduct, thus presenting significant potential as a clean, sustainable energy source.

Why Consider Hydrogen?
Our assessment included hydrogen as a possible energy solution due to its zero-carbon emissions profile and the significant investments and advancements being made within Scotland. With projects backed by substantial government funding, hydrogen presents a promising future energy carrier, aligning with national and regional sustainability goals.

Challenges and Feasibility
Despite its potential, our detailed evaluation revealed that hydrogen is currently financially unfeasible for immediate implementation in Balgair due to high initial capital costs and ongoing operating expenses. The present cost of green hydrogen (£0.20–£0.30/kWh) significantly exceeds the affordability threshold for our community, and infrastructure requirements further compound the challenges.
The Future of Hydrogen
Although hydrogen is currently less feasible for immediate deployment, its long-term outlook is optimistic:
-
Increasing Demand: Global hydrogen usage is projected to increase tenfold by 2050.
-
Falling Costs: Technological advancements are rapidly reducing production costs, potentially making green hydrogen competitive with natural gas by 2040.
-
Scottish Projects: Scotland's commitment is evident through significant investments exceeding £100 million in hydrogen projects, enhancing infrastructure, production capacity, and research and development.
The continued evolution of hydrogen technology and economics should be closely monitored for potential future integration into Balgair’s energy mix.
